The Sculpture Process

OVERVIEW

My sculptural work is born from a need for stillness, grace and connection in a world that moves fast– overflowing with noise, urgency and constant motion. It is deeply rooted in nature which I see as the great equalizer. Every year, millions of people flock to national parks, and the viewpoints up the Pacific Coast Highway are bustling with visitors. This universal pull towards nature reflects our innate connection to the natural world—a space that not only showcases grandeur and beauty but also serves as a sanctuary for inspiration, thinking, and reflection.

Growing up in a turbulent environment led me to grapple with existential questions from an early age. Consequently, my art has become a pursuit of meaning, joy, and a quest for wisdom that enables me to find grace amidst chaos, strength in instability, and resilience in an ever-changing world.

THE BEGINNING STAGES

The initial phase of my creative process involves crafting abstract drawings that embody the spirit, flow, and self-expression witnessed in nature, whether it be a tree, or even the patterns in the movement of subatomic particles. Translated into sculpture, these works embody biomorphic forms— flowing, organic shapes that reflect nature’s internal currents rather than its surface. I strive to channel the essence of nature and the profound connection it evokes within us.

THE DESIGN PHASE

Creating a three dimensional object begins with working a digitized model of the concept, attempting to streamline the drawing to enhance that sense of flow into a three dimensional space. This phase also goes through engineering to make sure it can withstand the elements and interaction with viewers.

I focus on crafting a dynamic experience as you move around each sculpture, its form shifts—dramatically. What feels expansive and reaching from one angle becomes dense and complex from another. This changing perspective invites active engagement and evokes the living energy of nature itself—subtle, fluid, and alive.

BUILDING THE SCULPTURE

Each sculpture is built by hand with a focus on durability, detail, and design integrity. The process begins with the construction of a custom steel armature, which serves as the internal framework, providing essential strength and stability. This is then wrapped with wire mesh to define the form and create a surface for the next stage.

A layer of hard foam is applied over the mesh and carefully shaped by hand—sanded and refined until the sculpture’s unique contours and flow are fully realized. A protective hard coat is then added to smooth the surface and provide long-term durability.

The final step is finishing: the sculpture is painted with high-quality enamel for a sleek, vibrant appearance. For installations in more extreme outdoor environments, an epoxy coating infused with metal flakes can be used for additional weather resistance and strength.

Every piece is the result of a highly considered, multi-stage process—designed to be both visually striking and structurally sound.

INSTALLATION

Each sculpture installation is thoughtfully tailored to the specific site and environment. Because every location is unique, the approach to installation considers a variety of factors—including scale, setting, and the level of public interaction the piece may have.

Whether the sculpture is placed indoors, outdoors, in a high-traffic area, or a more intimate setting, I work closely with a trusted team of experienced professionals to ensure it is installed safely and securely. This team may include fabricators, installers, and licensed structural engineers when needed, depending on the complexity of the site and sculpture.

Clients can feel confident knowing that every precaution is taken to meet all safety and code requirements. My goal is not only to create a visually impactful work, but also to ensure it is structurally sound and fully integrated into its surroundings for years to come.

THE FINISHED SCULPTURE

Once the final sculpture is installed, it’s ready to be experienced and enjoyed by visitors, patrons, employees or residents.
