There’s Nothing Here. Except Everything.

Each piece in this series is a story of our fragile and sometimes messy relationship with ourselves and our environment, with an offering to explore deeper consciousness.

I spent my summer vacations as a kid visiting the desert. In spite of the heat, my parents took us because it was close and inexpensive. I remember those vacations as a peaceful break from the conflict at home. I feel most myself, alone in nature. It's quiet. It doesn't judge or criticize. It's honest, and has no agenda. It's the great equalizer. Social media, politics, and fast paced city life feel far away.

Yet, wherever I go, I bring me with me. My opinions. My hangups. My habits and psychological blind spots.

I've had many insights sitting alone in the desert. I've found many answers to my biggest questions, buried in the quiet expanses of what could easily be dismissed as nothing. We tend to think of ourselves as flesh and bone, but it’s electromagnetic energy that makes us alive. Unseen forces run the world. These works were created to promote introspection, honor our environment, and provide a window into some of those unseen forces.

Each work in this series contrasts urban complexity and edge with the contemplative grandeur of the Mojave desert in 3 dimensional assemblages using laser cut layers of wood panels, printed, painted and drawn on. The titles are taken from poems I’ve written on the subject. A multi-media book will be available late 2024.
