I took a break while waiting for a coat of varnish to dry on a piece for my upcoming show at Fabrik Projects in Culver City, CA to play one of my favorite Tom Waits songs…and confess why I haven’t posted an update in awhile.

THOUGHTS FROM THE CREATIVESPHERE
"It’s human desire to be understood. And we always feel we’re not understood."
There is so much that goes into making art that can easily be missed when you look at a finished image. There are the the inspirations that spawn it, the epiphanies and breakthroughs that fuel it, as well as a slew of failures and challenges to overcome along the way. All to me are equally as interesting and important. This is what I call the Creativesphere. It's the magical place where overflowing optimism and possibility collide with the cold, hard realities of life.
This blog is dedicated to that process. The process of not only creating, but appreciating…attempting to understand…and finding ourselves in it.
I studied Buddhism a lot when I was younger and was always fascinated by the Buddhist koans. Short poems made to short circuit the logical mind and open an opportunity to experience an enlightened state. Much of my interest in music and art stems from this same idea. Essentially to bypass the gatekeeper in my head. This piece is from a new series in progress. I’m still working out exactly where it’s going. This is the my favorite part of the process. There is a path ahead, but I’m not sure where it’s exactly going yet.
There’s something missing
This isn’t right
Something feels off
I need to fix this
But it’s missing pieces
That fuel my ambition
To move forward
Nature hates a void

I created this piece of art as a tribute to one of my favorite comedians, and host of two of my favorite shows, “The Colbert Report” and “Late Night with Stephen Colbert.” I used roofing cement, chewed bubblegum, acrylic paint, plexiglass and 8 pints of his Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor, Americone Dream.
He truly is “The Originalist.” Cheers Stephen! You’re making a difference in this world.
My birthday is over
My special day
And filed in a drawer
With the others
As the years pass
My cabinet is getting more full
Watching fireworks at Disneyland
A surprise party at my parents house
A concert I performed in Chicago
The song my wife wrote and sang to me in the mountains
Each one a special kind of special [Read more…] about A Birthday Vigil
